Hammer of the Righteous

Hammer of the Righteous is awesome.

I tanked Utgarde Keep again last night much more assured of how to handle the dungeon. I started off using my Hammer of Judgment but I decided to experiment and use Coldstone Cutlass instead just after the first boss.

Now these numbers are rough but with the hammer I was doing about 200ish holy damage per hit with Hammer of the Righteous. When I switched to the cutlass my damage per hit jumped to about 540ish holy damage per hit. Keep in mind this is hitting up to three targets every three seconds for about 140ish mana.

I will get exact numbers tonight, along with a Combat Log for better documentation.

Now you may think my overall spell damage suffered but my attack power increased, not enough to be commensurate with the loss but not so much that I would be gimped. What I noticed is that I could change my cycles up; I did not have to use Consecrate much, beyond maybe initial contact with the pull or to pick up incoming adds. Once I had them established and on me, I could tab target Hammer of the Righteous and hold threat very easy while keeping a modest mana pull only resorting to Consecrate when I needed a threat boost on several mobs at once.

This ability is ridiculously cheap at this point, usable every six seconds, and it deals really nice damage when you have a proper weapon to take advantage of it. I know it may be hard to do, but I am inclined to say that the days of us hunting down spell damage weapons may be coming to an end; or it will be reserved solely for AoE damage and even then that may be questionable.

Personally I enjoyed it, it made paladin tanking seem much more active; Hammer of the Righteous is a step in the right direction. Cheap high threat ability that hits multiple enemies so it plays to our strengths as a tank, and yet allows us much greater flexibility in and out of tanking role.

I still have to verify if it can crit, I have not seen it crit, but then again I need to look through my combat logs to see for sure.

More to come as I play with this ability more.

Edit: Revising my numbers, the numbers seem high so I think I may have been seeing critical hits instead of normal damage.

Just some screenshots from beta I took!  Utgarde Keep was fun if a little easy and quick to complete.  Pics after the jump.

We’re pleased to announce a convenient upgrade to the way that mounts and vanity pets are handled in Wrath of the Lich King.

Players will be able to “learn” a mount or non-combat pet much like learning a spell, recipe, or new ability, and these creatures will then show up on a new Pet tab within the Character Info section of the interface. Players will be able to access and preview their learned mounts and vanity pets through this tab.

Once learned, the pet icon or mount icon will no longer appear in bag spaces or bank spaces. This inventory space will be made available once again for other adventuring needs. Pets can still be set to hotkeys by dragging them to the hotkey bar, much like any other spell or ability .

From what I can glean from this post in the Beta forums the Seal/Judgment system is changing in Wrath of the Lich King. A basic breakdown of the Changes:-Judgment is now broken up into three spells, Judgment of Wisdom (JoW), Judgment of Light (JoL), and Judgment of Justice (JoS).

-Now when one of those three Judgment spells is used the Judgment debuff plus Holy Damage is done based on the active seal, assuming Seal of Righteousness, Seal of Vengeance/Corruption, Seal of Blood/Martyr, and Seal of Command. The current seal still remains after the Judgment is used. Seals still last 30 seconds.

-The current seals are staying as is, though there is speculation that Seal of Wisdom, Seal of Light, and Seal of Justice may be going away.

-Seal of the Crusader is now gone and the 210 Holy Damage has been rolled into all abilities that could make use of the spell. This is a buff.

Speculation:

-Currently it seems that both the Judgment of the Seal and the Debuff are doing damage, meaning that Judgment of Wisdom causes holy damage and then the Seal Judgment also causes holy damage; I am not sure if this is intended.

-Paladin damaging spells may be affected by Attack power, just like Deathknights.

-There seems to be confusion on if our abilities are affected by both Attack Power and Spell Damage. If it is both I think this will make our abilities too good since our spell damage, assuming Tier 5+ geared protection paladin should approach 1000 spell damage in current gear with the new talents.

Well after our progression kill on Reliquary of Souls on Sunday, followed by Mother Shahraz on Monday; Taurential Reign is only one boss from Illidan; two bosses from completing all Tier 6 content. Not a huge accomplishment at this point in the game, but for our casual style of play, semi-casual, it is huge. Considering I never finished AQ40 and only killed one Instructor Razuvius a few times pre Burning Crusade; this bodes well for our raid.

On a plus side I got to tank Reliquary of Souls, phase 3, which was intense and fun. I am still cursed for getting a new helmet; been rocking Tier 4 for about a year now, maybe a little less. It is time for a change.

I am hoping to either replace with in order of preference; Faceplate of the Impenetrable, Lightbringer Faceguard, or Battleworn Tuskguard. Just need something new, but other then that I am looking forward to finishing Black Temple and hopefully making some serious forays into Sunwell Plateau.

I am pleased with our rate of progression.
